What is network segmentation, and why is it important?
Answer:
Network segmentation divides one home network into several separate, protected sections. For example, personal computers and phones may use one network, smart home and IoT devices another, security cameras a third, and visitors a dedicated guest network.
Segmentation improves security by controlling which devices are allowed to communicate with one another.
If a vulnerable smart appliance, camera, or guest device is compromised, the problem can be contained instead of providing easy access to personal computers, stored files, automation processors, or other critical systems.
Both CISA and NIST recommend separating smart home or IoT devices from more sensitive devices for this reason. However, segmentation must be configured carefully so authorized systems can still communicate when necessary.
