Not always, but adding a properly selected and calibrated subwoofer can dramatically improve the performance of an architectural audio system.

In-wall and in-ceiling speakers can deliver exceptional sound on their own, but a dedicated subwoofer reproduces the deepest frequencies in music and movie soundtracks. This adds greater depth, scale, and impact while allowing the architectural speakers to focus on the frequencies they reproduce best.

Bowers & Wilkins offers several subwoofers specifically designed for custom installation. The flagship ISW-8, for example, combines a powerful 12-inch Aerofoil™ bass driver with a slim in-wall design that can fit within a standard 2×4 stud wall. Its vibration-isolated backbox is engineered to reduce the transfer of unwanted vibration into the surrounding wall while delivering powerful, controlled bass. Bowers & Wilkins designed the ISW-8 specifically to complement its high-performance CI700 and CI800 architectural speakers.

Subwoofers become especially important in a dedicated home theater. Movie soundtracks contain a dedicated low-frequency effects channel designed for the deep bass behind explosions, cinematic effects, musical scores, and other high-impact moments. One or more properly positioned subwoofers can also help create smoother, more consistent bass throughout the seating area rather than concentrating it in one location.

For homeowners who prefer a discreet installation, Bowers & Wilkins in-wall subwoofers allow much of that low-frequency performance to be incorporated directly into the architecture rather than requiring a large freestanding subwoofer in the room.

Definitive Electronics determines the appropriate subwoofer solution based on the room, architectural speakers, listening preferences, desired performance, and application. For a whole-home music system, a subwoofer may add richness and depth. In a high-performance listening space or private home theater, it can become an essential part of the experience.
