How many connected devices can a home network realistically support?
Answer:
A properly engineered network can support hundreds of devices simultaneously, including automation systems, AV, security, mobile devices, and future technologies.
The advertised maximum for an access point is not the same as its practical capacity. Some enterprise access points can technically accept hundreds or even more than 1,000 client connections, but real-world performance depends on what those devices are doing.
A security sensor uses very little bandwidth, while multiple 4K video streams, video calls, cloud backups, and gaming systems place much greater demands on the network.
Capacity also depends on how devices are distributed among access points, the amount of wireless interference, signal strength, available internet speed, and the wired connections between network components.
