Battery life in Lutron motorized shades depends on the product, the shade size, and usage frequency. Triathlon Select shades running on D-cell alkaline batteries achieve a typical two-year battery life under normal usage conditions. Triathlon Standard Roller and other Triathlon products are rated similarly. Palladiom wire-free shades, also D-cell powered, achieve three to five years under typical conditions because the machined drive is optimized for efficiency at larger format sizes. Lutron’s engineering advantage over competing battery shade systems is measurable: the motor controller monitors battery voltage continuously and compensates for declining voltage to maintain consistent shade speed and torque throughout the battery’s discharge curve, rather than operating inconsistently as the battery approaches depletion. Battery replacement for Palladiom wire-free shades does not require removing the shade from its brackets.
